PROJECTS IN
PLANNING
we are currently preparing project
proposals on Carnival Arts, and Musical Theatre. These are in the planning
stage, so please watch this space if you need more details.
CURRENT PROJECTS
Excursions
We are running a 2-year Lottery-funded
project in which young people help plan and deliver their own Arts activities.
We are working with young people in the Palace Youth Theatre and Leigh Youth
Theatre and our own Back Stage Crew.
Making Waves
We are just finishing a joint project
at St. Bernards High School, Westcliff. An after-school group will research
and document the stories of people who have chosen to come to Southend - to
visit, to settle or just to stay a while. This project is being managed by
Kimberley Skehan, so please go to www.dramatize.co.uk for more details.
Leigh
Mummers
We have hepled set up a group for occasional
folk plays, storytelling and street theatre events. The group will meet as
and when they need to and there are no charges or membership fees.We are looking
for actors, musicians, singers and costume-makers etc. If you want to be involved

DIRECTIONS
Performance project for young adults with learning disabilities:
Drama and Art workshops in the community and in special school in Southend and
Castle Point. The aim was to extend access and help develop self esteem in those
participating. This project led to regular workshops at a day centre for adults
with severe learning disabilities in Canvey.

1998: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS: Schools workshops to support
Literacy for Southend Youth Arts Partnership
Drama, story-telling and art
workshops themed on `Alice` to support the newly-introduced Literacy Hour. In
primary schools throughout Essex

1999 MIND MATTERS: project with young people on positive mental
health
We worked with a group of young people at Leigh Youth Centre to
produce a performance work on Mental Health, looking at issues and attitudes.
The piece was presented at a Southend Theatre, a MIND conference, and for
community groups.

2000 LIVING HISTORY
To mark the Millennium, we helped children
research, devise and present a piece looking at the lives of local people in the
last century. There was a public performance at SEEVIC College Theatre, Castle
Point

2001 KEEP THE HOME FIRES BURNING
As part of a wider project,
we worked with pupils from with Cecil Jones High School and residents of
Southend care homes to present a performance based on oral
history.

2002 WAKERING SUMMER SCHOOL:
Multi-cultural Summer arts
activities in a rural area. For Wakering Youth Theatre.

02-03 TRAVELLERS TALES:
Multi-cultural performance project
with Palace Youth Theatre. We worked with young people for a year to produce an
original performance work drawing on the culture of Japan, India, North America,
Africa, Australia and Britain, concentrating mainly on myths and stories from
the indigenous peoples. As part of this project we researched performance, dance
and legends from these countries, and were able to share what we had learned in
Schools and leisure workshops and events.
The piece was performed in a
theatre and two festivals.

2003 TURN OF THE WHEEL
During our Travellers Tales project we
were surprised to find that the children knew very little about British culture.
We therefore ran this Summer School in Rayleigh looking at the roots of British
culture, with traditions arising from seasonal cycles, linked to early
agriculture

20003/4 ALBION: Performance project exploring British cultural
traditions
We continued work from the Summer School with young people from
the Palace Youth Theatre, tracing the development of these traditions, and
presented a video-taped performance at the New Empire Theatre, Southend.
We
also ran workshops in the community.

2003/4 STICKS AND STONES: Anti-bullying project
We worked with
children from Castle Point Youth Theatre to address the issue of bullying in
schools and outside, and helped them devise and stage a performance piece at
SEEVIC College Theatre. We also took workshops to schools.

2004 /5 LEGACY: Local History project
Our largest project to
date. We formed a community group to research the history of Southchurch then
ran writing and acting workshops to put together an original community
performance telling the story of the local area.

Summer School for young people in Rochford
& Rayleigh to commemorate WW2.

Feb.`04- Aug.`04 TURNING POINT:
Music Theatre Summer School
for young people on choices and consequences.The story was based on peer
pressure and the temptation to try illegal drugs, and had a positive outcome.
The week was supported by Southend Youth & Connexions Service
